-
“Il disegno è molto importante per me. Ogni giorno e ogni notte schizzo disegni e disegni e ancora disegni…

ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT
New Tribal Labyrinth
Opening: Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 from 19.00 till 21.00
From November 30th, 2011 till January 14th, 2012
From Tuesday to Saturday 10:30-12:30, 15:30-19:00
Giò Marconi gallery is very pleased to present New Tribal Labyrinth, Atelier van Lieshout’s fifth solo show in the gallery. Founded in 1995 and directed by artist Joep van Lieshout (1963, Ravenstein), Atelier van Lieshout (AVL) is active internationally in contemporary art, design and architecture. In the last years the artworks of van Lieshout have moved more and more towards sculpture for which the artist uses diverse materials as plastic, foam fiberglass, wood, steel and bronze.
For his current show at the gallery Van Lieshout has worked on his recurring themes of work organization, power structures and autarky therewith implying an emerging new tribal organization. His artworks on display reflect upon the extremely advanced and complex society of today in which over-consumption and limited raw materials play a crucial role. These changes will see an emergence of various new cultures in the near future. Once supplies are exhausted society will see a harshening of relations between people and increased survival instinct which raises the question whether such radical changes, that are coupled with violence but might also lead to a new improved society, are good or bad.
According to Joep van Lieshout a New Tribal organization in which groups of people will start to organize themselves in tribes instead of countries and nationalities will establish itself. On the occasion of New Tribal Labyrinth, Atelier Van Lieshout presents 14 new works which will be on display in the ground floor spaces and in the courtyard of the gallery.
Atelier van Lieshout was founded in 1995 by Joep van Lieshout.
AVL’s works are displayed at PS1 and at MOMA, New York, at Stichting Museum, Rotterdam, at Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, at Kunstverein, Düsseldorf, at MACBA, Barcellona, at Centro per le Arti Contemporanee Luigi Pecci, Prato and other public and private museums all over the world.
In 2001 realized AVL-Ville, a kind of city-state in the harbours of Rotterdam, in which they combine the ideals of AVL.
In the last years AVL exhibited at: La Biennale, Venice (2003), Sprengel Museum, Hannover (2004), Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna (2005), Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo (2005), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2005, 2008), Central del Arte, Guadalajara Mexico (2006), Shangai Biennal, Shangai (2006), 10ma Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, Venice (2006), MACRO, Rome (2007), Museum Folkwang, Essen (2008), Onderzeebotenloods/ Museum Boijmans, Rotterdam (2010), Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011).
